The upcoming Netflix film “Ghooskhor Pandat,” produced by Neeraj Pandey and starring Manoj Bajpayee, has ignited a significant controversy over its title. The dispute escalated rapidly after the film's announcement and teaser release, drawing widespread criticism for its perceived offensive nature.
The Core of the Controversy The title “Ghooskhor Pandat” combines “ghooskhor” (a colloquial Hindi term for a bribe-taker) with “Pandat,” which is commonly associated with the Brahmin community. Critics argue that this linkage could perpetuate negative stereotypes and hurt sentiments, leading to widespread calls for its withdrawal.
FWICE Issues Strong Objection and Warning
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), a key body representing artists, technicians, and workers in the industry, formally objected to the title:
• Formal Communication: FWICE sent a letter to major producers’ bodies and OTT platforms, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Zee5, and SonyLIV.
• Derogatory Stance: The organization asserted that the title “appears to single out and target a particular community and its traditional means of livelihood in a derogatory and offensive manner,” potentially disturbing social harmony.
• Threat of Industry Action: FWICE warned that if the title is not promptly withdrawn, it might advise its associations and members to distance themselves from any future projects by the production house, potentially leading to a boycott of technicians and crew.
Broader Legal and Political Repercussions
The controversy has extended into legal and political arenas, highlighting its serious nature:
• Legal Complaints: An FIR has been lodged in Lucknow against the film’s creators for allegedly hurting caste sentiments, and a writ petition seeks a stay on its release in the Delhi High Court.
• Political Criticism: Organizations like the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) have condemned the title as offensive, urging action against the film.
• Content Removal: Authorities reportedly directed Netflix India to remove the teaser and promotional content from official channels.
Filmmakers Respond to the Outcry
Both Neeraj Pandey and Manoj Bajpayee have addressed the escalating backlash:
• Neeraj Pandey’s Statement: The producer acknowledged that the title had “hurt” some viewers and announced the temporary removal of all promotional material. He clarified that “Pandat” is used merely as a colloquial name for a character in a fictional cop drama and is not meant to represent any caste or community.
• Manoj Bajpayee’s Address: The actor respected the shared emotions, stating that his role focused on portraying a “flawed individual” and his journey of self-realization, not making a statement about any specific community.
Industry Standards and Procedural Lapses Adding to the pressure, the Film Makers Combine (FMC) also objected to the title on procedural grounds, noting it had not been formally approved under standard title registration processes. The FMC cautioned the production and Netflix against using an unauthorized title. This ongoing dispute underscores the critical balance between creative freedom and cultural sensitivity within the Indian film industry.
