Veteran actor Rajpal Yadav, widely celebrated for his iconic comic roles, has surrendered at Delhi’s Tihar Jail to serve a six-month sentence related to a decade-old cheque-bounce case. This high-profile case involves an outstanding amount of nearly Rs 9 crores, sparking widespread discussions in the Hindi film industry and among political circles.
The Genesis of the Cheque Bounce Case
The legal saga dates back to 2010 when Rajpal Yadav reportedly borrowed Rs 5 crores from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd. The funds were intended to finance his directorial venture, 'Ata Pata Laapata'. Unfortunately, the film underperformed at the box office, leading to significant financial setbacks for the actor. Over the years, the original loan, compounded by interest, penalties, and delayed payments, escalated to approximately Rs 9 crores. To settle these dues, Yadav issued several cheques to the lender, which were subsequently dishonoured, initiating criminal proceedings under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
Court Proceedings and Surrender
The Delhi High Court, on February 2, 2026, directed Rajpal Yadav to surrender by 4 pm on February 4, citing his repeated breaches of undertakings as conduct that deserved deprecation. Despite a last-minute attempt on February 5, 2026, where Yadav's counsel offered a demand draft of Rs 25 lakhs and proposed a new payment schedule, the judge declined to revoke the surrender order. The court emphasized the need to balance compassion with discipline, stating that special circumstances could not be created for individuals from the film industry. Following this, Yadav surrendered at Tihar Jail, where he commenced his six-month sentence.
Industry and Political Support Emerges
In a heartwarming display of solidarity, several public figures have stepped forward to offer financial assistance to Rajpal Yadav during this challenging period:
• Rao Inderjeet Singh Yadav (GemTunes Music Owner): Pledged a substantial Rs 1.1 crores. He stated, “Our industry is a family, and families hold each other when it matters most.”
• Tej Pratap Yadav (National President, Jan Shakti Janata Dal): Offered financial aid of Rs 11,00,000, expressing empathy and solidarity with the actor’s family.
• Kamaal R Khan (Actor & Film Critic): Committed Rs 10 lakhs and urged the broader Bollywood fraternity to collectively contribute, aiming to gather Rs 5 crores to help Yadav secure an early release.
• Sonu Sood & Gurmeet Chaudhary: Earlier, these actors had also extended their support, showcasing the industry's commitment to standing by its members.
