Filmmaker and actor Anurag Kashyap has recently found himself embroiled in significant legal controversy. A court in Surat has directed the police to register a criminal case against him concerning alleged derogatory remarks made about the Brahmin community on social media.

The order was issued by Judicial Magistrate First Class A S Jani, following a private complaint lodged by lawyer and Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Kamlesh Raval. The court observed that there appeared to be sufficient grounds to investigate whether Kashyap's posts could have harmed the reputation of a specific community and potentially fueled social tension. The directive mandates the registration of a case under sections related to:
• Promoting hostility between different groups.
• Intentional insult intended to disturb public peace.
• Circulation of allegedly misleading information.
Allegations and Background
The complaint by Raval, a member of the Brahmin community, specifically targets Kashyap’s posts on 'X' (formerly Twitter), which allegedly contained objectionable comments targeting Brahmins. The controversy reportedly stems from the filmmaker’s reactions to criticism surrounding the trailer launch of the Hindi film 'Phule' in April last year. It is further alleged that Kashyap not only posted offensive comments but also continued to engage in such remarks while responding to opposing views online. The complaint also referenced an older social media post from January 2020, where Kashyap had allegedly criticised the Union government using terms deemed objectionable towards Hindus.

Raval argued that public figures like Kashyap wield considerable influence due to their prominence in cinema and entertainment. Their statements are widely followed by audiences across various age groups, making their public pronouncements highly impactful. This amplification of potentially divisive content by influential personalities was a key point in the complaint. Reports indicate that multiple notices and summons were previously issued to Kashyap regarding this matter. However, according to the complainant, Kashyap failed to respond to these, leading to the reported issuance of a non-bailable warrant against him. As of now, Anurag Kashyap has not issued any public statement concerning the latest court order.
