This week sets the stage for an exciting box office clash, but not without its challenges. While Akshay Kumar's highly anticipated Hindi film, Welcome To The Jungle, is generating immense excitement among exhibitors, the Hollywood superhero flick Supergirl is struggling to secure prime showtimes, leading to significant delays in its advance bookings.
The Release Showdown Both 'Welcome To The Jungle' and 'Supergirl' are slated for release on Friday, June 26. However, a clear preference for the Bollywood comic caper has emerged within the exhibition sector, impacting the showcasing opportunities for the DC Comics adaptation.
Exhibitors Prioritize 'Welcome To The Jungle'
Trade sources indicate a 'tremendous excitement' for 'Welcome To The Jungle' among exhibitors. The film's distributor has also requested extensive promotion, a directive theatres are diligently adhering to. This prioritization means that 'Supergirl' is finding it difficult to secure its desired number of shows, even with reasonable demands from Warner Bros.
'Supergirl' Booking Hurdles
As of June 24, 7:00 pm, the booking situation for 'Supergirl' was dire across most major regions:
• Mumbai Metropolitan Region: Bookings commenced only in Devgn CineX at The Walk.
• Delhi and Ahmedabad: Same multiplex chain initiated bookings.
• Pune: Not a single cinema hall had begun ticket sales.
• National Chains (PVR Inox, Cinepolis): No bookings opened in any property across the North, Eastern, and Western belts.
Warner Bros. has explicitly stated their demand for 2 prime shows in 4-screen multiplexes and 3 prime shows in multiplexes with more than 4 screens. Despite these seemingly reasonable requests, securing adequate showcasing remains a challenge.
Warner Bros.'s Stance and Hope for Resolution
Warner Bros. believes their demands are fair, especially considering their commitment to releasing films during the COVID-19 pandemic when many Hindi filmmakers hesitated. The studio feels they should not face 'step-motherly treatment' now that market conditions have improved. Negotiations are reportedly ongoing, with hopes for an amicable resolution by Wednesday night or Thursday morning, ensuring 'Supergirl' receives fair showcasing across the country.
