The landmark Indian film, English, August (1994), is set to make a grand return with its newly restored 4K version, celebrating its World Premiere in the prestigious Venice Classics Competition at the upcoming 83rd Venice International Film Festival. This highly anticipated event marks a significant moment for Indian cinema, bringing a beloved classic back to the global stage.
A Cinematic Masterpiece Reimagined Based on Upamanyu Chatterjee’s bestselling 1988 novel, English, August is a darkly comic and irreverent exploration of post-colonial identity. The film intricately follows a young man from an elite, Westernized background as he navigates the unfamiliar and bureaucratic landscape of small-town India. Its incisive commentary and unique narrative have cemented its place as a pivotal work in Indian independent cinema.
The Meticulous Restoration by Film Heritage Foundation Film Heritage Foundation (FHF), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving India's cinematic heritage, is behind this meticulous 4K restoration. This marks FHF's third consecutive year showcasing a world premiere of its restorations in Venice, following Girish Kasaravalli’s Ghatashraddha (2024) and Bimal Roy’s Do Bigha Zamin (2025).
Key aspects of the restoration process include:
- No original camera and sound negatives survived, requiring FHF to work with two 35 mm release prints.
- Close collaboration with director Dev Benegal and cinematographer Anoop Jotwani to ensure fidelity to their original vision.
- Sound restoration efforts by Vikram Joglekar, utilizing digital audio tapes preserved by Dev Benegal.
Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, Director, Film Heritage Foundation, emphasized their mission: “Film Heritage Foundation chose to restore English, August in keeping with our policy to restore unusual, artistically important films that are in danger of being lost.”
Voices from the Team The film's return has been met with immense joy and gratitude from its creators:
- Dev Benegal (Director): Expressed profound gratitude to FHF, stating, “Restoration is more than preserving a film; it is the preservation of a conversation across generations. Seeing the film return to the screen… is both humbling and deeply gratifying.”
- Rahul Bose (Lead Actor): Described the news as “incredible,” adding, “To go to Venice and watch it 31 years after that memorable evening at TIFF where it debuted, will be personally, so surreal and so emotional.”
- Anuradha Parikh (Producer/Production Designer): Shared her excitement, saying, “3 decades later. English, August. Venice Film Festival 2026?! I am beyond excited. And so deeply moved. Thank you, Venice. Thank you, Film Heritage Foundation. For giving English, August a new lease of life and love.”
The film will be presented at Venice by director Dev Benegal, lead actor Rahul Bose, producer and production designer Anuradha Parikh, and Film Heritage Foundation Director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur.
This premiere not only celebrates the enduring legacy of English, August but also underscores the critical importance of film preservation for future generations.
