Eros International Files ₹84 Cr Lawsuit Against Aanand L Rai Over 'Tere Ishk Mein' - The Raanjhanaa 'Spiritual Sequel' Controversy

A significant legal battle has erupted in Bollywood, with Eros International Media filing a commercial IP suit against filmmaker Aanand L Rai and his production house, Colour Yellow Media Entertainment LLP. The dispute, valued at a staggering Rs. 84 crores, centers on the 2025 Dhanush-Kriti Sanon starrer, *Tere Ishk Mein*, which Eros alleges was unlawfully promoted as a ‘spiritual sequel’ to their highly successful 2013 film, *Raanjhanaa*.

This isn't the first time these two parties have clashed; a prior disagreement arose last year when Eros re-released *Raanjhanaa* with an AI-altered ending. Now, the stakes are considerably higher, with Eros accusing Rai's team of trademark and copyright infringement, drawing a line in the sand over intellectual property rights in the Indian film industry.

The Allegations: Unauthorised 'Spiritual Sequel'

The crux of Eros International's lawsuit in the Bombay High Court is the accusation that *Tere Ishk Mein* was deliberately marketed and positioned as a continuation or spiritual successor to *Raanjhanaa* without their explicit permission. Eros, as the producer and exclusive owner of all intellectual property rights in *Raanjhanaa*, including copyright, registered trademarks, character rights (Kundan Shankar, Murari), and remake/sequel rights, claims these were severely misused.

Specific Infringements Cited by Eros:

Promotional Material: The announcement video for *Tere Ishk Mein* prominently featured lines like ‘From the world of Raanjhanaa’. Eros also claims the teaser utilized footage, background score, and music directly from *Raanjhanaa*, despite Eros no longer owning the music rights.
Character Rights: The suit highlights striking similarities in key characters. Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub's portrayal of Murari in *Tere Ishk Mein* is alleged to be highly akin to his character in *Raanjhanaa*, serving a similar narrative purpose as a sharp-witted friend. Similarly, Shankar, the protagonist of *Tere Ishk Mein*, is claimed to mirror *Raanjhanaa's* Kundan, sharing analogous emotional beats, themes, and overall character arcs.

Legal Action and Parties Involved

Apart from Aanand L Rai and Colour Yellow Media Entertainment LLP, the commercial IP suit also names other significant industry players: T-Series, writer Himanshu Sharma, and OTT partner Netflix. This broad inclusion underscores the extent of the alleged infringement and the wide-reaching impact it could have on the film's distribution and ancillary rights.

Eros had previously issued a cease-and-desist notice on July 25, 2025, followed by reminders in September, which led to the removal of explicit references to *Raanjhanaa* from promotional materials. However, upon watching *Tere Ishk Mein*, Eros claims to have discovered "extensive" copyright and trademark violations, reinforcing their belief that the film continued to be positioned as a “spiritual sequel” in substance, if not in explicit marketing.

This lawsuit could set a significant precedent for intellectual property rights, character ownership, and the concept of 'spiritual sequels' in Bollywood, forcing creators and producers to meticulously review their promotional strategies and narrative connections to existing franchises.
